Since 2000, permafrost degradation has released an estimated 300 million metric tons of additional CO2 equivalent annually—equivalent to the emissions from 65 million vehicles. This matters strategically because it creates a self-reinforcing feedback loop: thawing permafrost releases methane and CO2, which accelerate warming, which causes more thaw. Understanding this acceleration is critical for climate forecasting accuracy and for resource planning in Arctic nations, as infrastructure collapse, supply chain disruption, and geopolitical competition for newly exposed resources are already underway.
